This particular tool is used to help make rugs using a method of 'prodding' strips of fabric through hessian from the back to create loops and strips woven throughout the hessian canvas.

And there are many names for the mats made with this technique and they're all equally fun to say, including, clippies, proddies, and even stobbies!

But the most common term for them is a "proggy mat" but here in bonny Scotland, they are occasionally called "clootie mats"!
